Re: Fuse exchange, have you tried?

There are three different locations in a component where fuses are commonly used:
1] Line voltage AC power supply.
    2] DC power supply.
    3] Power amplifier speaker output.

So with each location, expect different results.

Re: Fuse exchange, have you tried?

    I had used this fuse : http://stores.ebay.com/diy-acoustics...=p4634.c0.m322

1 each for the DIY mono power amp (Hypex Ncore NC400)
2x for digital source (Aurender A10)
1x for my pre amp (ARC LS27)

SQ from slow and dull to fast + extended high (airy) + more dynamics.
Sometime a little bit too bright for me, but all the micro details came out.
    Regards, EH.

Re: Fuse exchange, have you tried?

I have a Synergistic Research Black fuse I tried in my Aavik U300. Made for a slightly tighter bass - hair more detail in the mids and highs. Mind you nothing earth shattering but a nice improvement for the $120 USD spent. To verify I put the original back in after about 100 hrs. Needless to say it was not staying in.

    I didn't make any changes.
I just pointed out that when others make changes, they need to state which location the fuse was in.

The Aavik only has 1 fuse that I'm aware of.

Yes. Bob Cordell in his book "Designing Audio Power Amplifiers" covers the subject, along with about every other part in an audio circuit.
Then I moved on to the low hanging fruit.

I tried an AMR fuse in my Magnepans. Total waste of money. They were very noticeably bright and rough sounding.

Re: Fuse exchange, have you tried?

Well it seems that everyone who tried the fuses felt differences in sound, that is, if there are differences for better or worse and sometimes not small, I think it is worth searching the right fuse, or my logic is wrong?
So few posts, it seems that fuses are not very popular here. There is someone here who wants to try out for free some fuses from Audiofidem. I've tried Sinergistic Research, AMR, Bussman, and some other that I don´t remember and I also tried Audiomagic (for me the second best fuses), no one gets even close to Audiofidem. But don´t trust me, hear for yourself.

I use HiFi Tuning Supreme fuses in the following gear: Mcintosh C1000C/P preamplifier, a pair of MC2301 power amplifiers, a pair of MC601 power amplifiers, a MC452 power amplifier, and a C2300 preamplifier. In all components I felt the HiFi Tuning Supreme fuses improved resolution to a degree. It is more evolutionary than revolutionary, but I was able to clearly hear an improvement when comparing the HiFi Tuning Supreme fuses to the stock fuses. It's been five years now and all of these components are still using these fuses to my complete satisfaction.

I can tell for your words that in each gear you got a little and audible improvement, in all of them the improvement was not so subtle, and was one of the cheapest ones.
In my opinion in audio there is nothing really revolutionary, we chose our equipment according to our possibilities and slowly we make upgrades, better gear, cables, speakers and so on, but we can't ignore every little improvement that some change may bring, because it is the sum of these small improvements (and there are many), commonly called ''fine tuning'', which often lead us to spectacular results.

This is true & very much the same for isolation too. Just the material that a shelf is made out of can ruin the definition from a component sometimes. Just about everything makes a difference.

    Hi Dan,

Is there a way I can check the fuse value of the MC452 and c2500 without opening them up?

    Thanks,

Do you mean the specified value for that component or the actual value of an individual fuse?

Paul.......You do not have to open the McIntosh MC452 power amplifier. The fuse holder is accessible on the rear of the amplifier between the speaker terminals. The McIntosh C2500 preamplifier does not have an external fuse holder. The incoming power fuse is located on the Backup PS circuit board that is accessible by removing the bottom cover. The fuse is held in a snap in fuse holder labeled F1 on the circuit board.

I have also noticed quite a difference in prices for the HiFi Tuning Supreme fuses. Ebay is much cheaper that the usual boutique places.

Paul.......The C2500 preamp fuse is T800mAL/250V. You will need to check the fuse size, but judging from the drawing in the C2500 service manual it appears to be a 5 x 20mm. This is a slow blow fuse.

The MC452 power amplifier fuse is 15A/250V fast blow fuse. Double check the size of the fuse in your amp, but I think it is a 6.3 x 32mm size fuse.
