I'm eyeing the new ModWright Ambrose One fully balanced preamp (or a potential upcoming version of it since it's new) as my long term solution. According to Dan it's a step above the LS 36.5 DM. It was part of the Axpona audio show in the spring and will be displayed at both RMAF (which I'm planning to attend to see it in person) as well as CAF.
I heard that new Ambrose One for an extended period at Axpona and it sounded VERY good. Hardly a surprise as Dan designs and produces wonderful products and stands behind them unquestionably. He is also simply a great guy
