Let's not forget the required loft space, with freight elevator access...these won't fit in your average "man cave".

Re: How to make a $300k speaker

I like OMA's slate plinths - a friend has one. Haven't heard the speakers, but I'd be curious how coherent and free of cupped hands artifacts they are.

btw, Daedalus and DeVore (and SF still does as I recall) use hardwood cabinets - so he's not the only game in town.

i have heard of a fellow making Heil line source speaker (dipole) with a Tymphany LAT type bass array: https://www.parts-express.com/tympha...ducer--299-850

BoM was like $75K in total of which driver cost was $25K. All bespoke DIY.

Such a speaker would retail over $600K with normal markup!

Thanks for posting this. Before I went in the direction I did for my turntable, I would browse the Technics plinths and rebuilds that OMA crafts. I think they make unique and often beautiful looking gear.

Re: How to make a $300k speaker

This place is not all that far from me here in PA. Interesting thing about the Slate, that was the first material I used to isolate a pair of speakers from the floor which tightened up muffled bass from some old Mirage 790s. I used some really old 1" thick walkway slabs.

    Thanks for posting this.

Slate plates make a lot of sense. They have a lot of internal dampening. Stacore uses slate in their (passive) isolation platforms.

Thanks for mentioning us Adam. Slate is great as a damper but, as any material, not prefect and of course still has its own resonances. From our experience, it still needs to be properly damped itself to avoid some artefacts in the mids.
