More time on my hands... suddenly

Got laid off today. Four months of severance, so not in a tough spot. I was actually looking to make a change, and now I have paid time to do it right.

Oh, and more time to listen to music More time on my hands... suddenly More time on my hands... suddenly More time on my hands... suddenly

I've been through that myself, only I only got paid up to the time I walked out the door (plus accrued leave entitlements). You're right, it is a catalyst for change..hopefully for the better. In my case, save for small patches of temp work I was unemployed for 3 years. So I had a hard time of it. Stay positive. Good luck with your next job.

Bummer Phil, I will going through that myself in a few months. The company I work for was sold and the higher level folks are being keep through transition. We were given a contract listing out a decent severance package when the time comes. Hopefully they don't try to pull anything.

    Hi Phil,

So sorry that you got laid off. But it could be a blessing in disguise. This course change often brings folks to a better place than they were before. Best of luck in your job search and enjoy the music in the meantime!

+ 1. Aside from enriching your life and those of the community (many of whom may be unseen), you can also get a good reference from the organization which can be useful.

That is good advice. After my first layoff in the early 90s I volunteered to help with the computers at a local elementary school. Anyway, I was amazed at how much some of the kids knew. They were teaching this old dog new tricks. LOL

Guys - I can't thank you enough for all of the positive words of encouragement. I've been spending the past week letting everything soak in and I know I'll end up in a much better place than where I started. I've been thinking of going back to school to learn a trade - electrical engineering, maybe? Otherwise I've been hanging out with my dog and riding my bikes. My wife has always wanted to commute to work by bike, and I've been escorting her in the morning and the turning around once she's there safe. Around 40 miles round-trip; not a bad way to start a day.

Phil - I think it's fairly safe to say, you are surrounded by many successful people here on Audioshark. I've had the pleasure to meet you and spend time listening with you. You've got a lot going for you. This is a pretty good group of people to bounce ideas off of.

Electrical engineering is an excellent trade and having just written some big ass checks to my electrician friend for the work on the store, I can assure you, it must pay pretty good!

Do something you enjoy and you'll never work a day in your life.

Sorry Phil. As my first employer said to me 30 years ago, find something that puts the fire in your belly and go for it! Shorty thereafter, I switched from being a commercial litigator to a divorce lawyer and never looked back. May good karma be with you. I'm certain this will be a beneficial opportunity for you!!

That is the best advice out there. Its not fun working with stress in a job that is "Just A Job". Might as well make it "fun".
