They do number the speakers, not pairs. Mine are #73/74.

our local dealer has S3 mk 1 #007/008

Yay, so you have The Very First Ones!

Thought Magico would have kept the #1 /2 for themselves.

I ordered them the second they were announced as I figured the S3 was already so good that the mk2 was going to be even better - and I haven't been disappointed. They really get out of their own way with that narrow front baffle and disappear. Bass is superb even in my 19 x 25 showroom.

I could be wrong, but Magico get serial number 000. I saw a photo of a Magico speaker on static display with 000 for a serial number (from what I could tell).

In Australia, 000 is the number you call for a Paramedic!

well, now that Magico invests in carbon fibre technology, it might make sense to go totally in carbon fibre enclosures, including the S-series/whatever they choose to call it.

I think it's wishful thinking for now. You're going to love the S3 mk2's. I love how they disappear. The narrow baffle and overall cabinet helps with this.

I am delighted they come in cardboard boxes now, the one big wooden monster for the S3 mk1 was a real pain to store.

True. But when you go to sell your S3 mk1 to upgrade to something else in the Magico stable you'll be glad you did store that one big wooden monster, as painful as it was to store.

This is a bit off-topic perhaps. Mike, could you comment the S3/2 versus M3 sonically, now that you have experienced both of them? TIA.

I'm not sure it's even fair to compare given that the S3 mk2's are $28,000 and the M3's (with MPOD's) are ~$85,000. But I will tell you that the M series sounds nothing like the S series, nor the Q series. As much as a departure in sound as the S series was from the Q series, the M series is much more so.

The S series brought many new fans into the Magico camp. The M series sound doubles that and then some. I can't tell you the number of people who first listened to the M3's and said, "oh, I once heard those Q5's. I wasn't really a fan. But these are awesome. I love these." They truly do not sound anything alike (Q v S v M). The Carbon Fiber in the M series has a sound all on its own and a measured ability to bring even more detail and nuances out of the music. When I saw him this week, Alon explained at length some of the lower distortion measured benefits of using carbon fiber, combined with the SOTA M series drivers and overall cabinet construction. But it's also very expensive to build.

On the bass front, the S3 mk2 produces *more* bass. The M3 has the edge for bass definition. The S3 mk2 has a slightly airier, fleet of foot sound, whereas the M3 has better coherence and weight. Both equally disappear well. Both are equally easy to drive. Both work great in small, medium or medium-large rooms. Both have great seamless sounds between the midrange and tweeter. They both produce that great Magico bass. If you're coming from another speaker where you are use to the puffy sounding "WOOF WOOF WOOF" ported bass, you may think there is "less bass", but the reality is, you are for the first time hearing REAL bass with a Magico. Better defined bass. Bass where you can follow along with the actual bass notes.

They are both excellent in their respective price brackets and I would be happy to own either one depending on my budget.

I get where you're coming from Mike, but I disagree... to a degree at least. The M, Q, and S series do sound different from each other, but they are all recognizable as having a "Magico sound" that is different from virtually all other brands of speakers.

TY Mike! I don't expect to get M3 sound for S3 money, but it was good to hear your opinion. I'm trying to find a dealer who has demo M3:s, just to hear them. None in Finland, I have to see what Sweden and Norway have to offer. Germany perhaps?

I think Alon is a little late to the party trying to introduce carbon fibre as something novel. The material has been around for ages and has been used for years by Wilson Benesch and many others.

That's true. I don't think he's claiming to be the first, just always finding new ways to improve Magico products. I would be curious to know how Magico is using Carbon Fibre vs others. For example, a complete wrap vs just sides, etc.

Isn't WB also using a monocoque approach, like Magico now in the M6?

We had this conversation already... Although I wrote this about Marten, it still holds for WB (see below). Unlike Marten, WB actually do describe, in details, how they build their carbon profiles, it is more similar to the Marten, still a sandwich but with a thicker core. It is very different then what Magico is doing in the M6 (it is certainly not a monocoque in the way Magico describes it, i.e "6 sided, seamless, enclosure").

"The use of the word CF can mean many different things, not all CF uses in a product are the same. The only description of Marten construction method that I could find is “The carbon fiber laminate is two layers of carbon sandwiched together with honeycomb Kevlar in between”. That is very different then Magico description of a “0.6” solid carbon body”. A common thickness of one layer of CF is ~0.5mm. In that case, the Magico enclosure will have to be made of 60 layers of CF sheets in comparison to Marten’s 2 layers."

My previous Marten Coltrane Alto's used a carbon composite monocoque enclosure formed in a similar way to a formula one tub. I posted some pics here.

I'm not a fabricator, but how do you deduce from "0.6" what metric they're referring to? From a purely layman's perspective, that could mean 0.6mm, 0.6cm or even 0.6in. Has anyone bothered to fact check this with Magico?

Interesting. Given it's sonic properties, I'm all in.

And I respectively don't agree that the M series sounds anything like the Q or S. To my ears, the M series is a quantum leap forward over the Q. And the S7/Sx mk2 series is freaking killer good.

When I had the M3's in my home, it was some of the most enjoyable, emotionally engaging listening I have ever had in nearly 40 years.

I'm afraid for my wallet to hear the M6's. If they sound as good as they look, game over. Yes, yes, yes I want a pair!

Thanks for the clarification LVB. That confirms for me that S series models are likely to continue to be made with extruded alu cabinets for the foreseeable future, which is fine by me. Even the M3's cabinet design would roughly double the cost of an S3/S5 Mk2.

Btw, from memory the Marten Coltrane Alto's carbon monocoque cabinet had a 1/2" thick front to increase rigidity & damping. From my basic knock tests, I can attest to that claim.
