Here's an older review of the SP100r2 from 6moons. I bet the SP200's are wonderful.

    Re: Spendor classic sp200 loudspeaker

I still have my SP 100s, it is used in my studio, it's a keeper. In fact I like Spendors so much I just bought a used pair of Spendor S9s for my living room where I have it hooked up to a pair of VTL tiny triodes with a Reference Line passive preamp. The tiny triodes have only 25 watts, but since the Spendors have such high efficiency, they are a perfect match.

I'm a huge fan of classic British monitors. Spendor, ProAc, Harbeth to name a few. Beautiful cabinetry and very musical. Wonderful stuff.

Thank you for the link. The more I see these speakers, the more I like them. Sort of my style. I know it might be impossible, but I am dying to hear them.

    Re: Spendor classic sp200 loudspeaker

As a former owner of Spendor SP-1s, I can definitely relate. I really enjoyed the time I owned them in the 80s. At the time I had a Linn LP-12 (Rega arm and Grado Sig cartridge) with a NAD 1020 pre and a Hafler modified amp. It was a reasonably priced system with lots of musicality.

    Joe

There must be a stocking dealer in the greater NYC area for you to hear a pair. They would more than likely be phenomenal with the Triode's and a Backert.

I think there's one in the city. I'm sure the Triodes on them would be fantastic. The SP200 are not cheap so I'd be in trouble if I wanted them. I just can't

If you look on YouTube, Triodes and Spendor are a popular combination. I have say my Strads and JBLs aren't too shabby with the Triodes as well.

Doubt they would be better than what you have but as with most of this stuff just different.

Joe, if you didn't care for the Harbeth sound (vs Strads), I'm not sure these would be any different.

If you want to try something mind blowing, get a pair of Quad's. You don't listen loud and they are absolutely beautiful in the mids.

He could go retro for sure with some 63's, but I really like the new 2812/2912 speakers. Quad's aren't overly efficient, but they can't play super loud either. I think Joe's Triode's would be a great match.

I bought a pair of sp200s in October and I am absolutely in love with them. In the process of upgrading the rest of my gear and with every upgrade, the difference in the quality, definition, impact of the music is astounding. The potential that these speakers contain seems to be unlimited. I just read the review of the recent Quad speakers on stereophile and, while I have not listened to them personally, it would seem that they are totally different than the spendors not really having the dynamic range and impact. The midrange on the spendors is magical as well. As far as their ability to be driven by an SET amp, I'm not sure that would the ideal situation since they are big speakers. I have a pair of ARC ref 250 se's and they sound fabulous with them. I would definitely give them a listen

I had a listen to the SP200s at a dealer, they were streaming off a server into ML gear. I enjoyed them and thought they were definitely cut from the same cloth as SP100s (I've owned two pairs those). Its unfair to compare the over-all sound to Magicos as i've heard the Q7 on down in this room and all of them brought more resolution to the table but none were more listenable over Rock music for instance, these did a fine job with Floyd and Dire straits we demoed them with.

    Re: Spendor classic sp200 loudspeaker

I have a pair of Kent McCullom’s restored 57’s and they are the most fun I’ve encountered with any speaker I’ve had the pleasure to own. They love tube gear and the midrange is to die for. Listening to them near-field feels like you have a pair of oversized headphones on. The music simply surrounds and envelops you.
