Well, I think we can expect some new series in the next few years more likely than S mk3 On the other hand there is no reason to change something when its really good. But I am sure that Alon Wolf has head full of ideas

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

When I was at Magico a couple of months ago to hear the S7/S5 comparison I asked Alon if there would be an S5 MK2, and he momentarily paused and said "You know I can't talk about future plans" (or something to that effect). Anyway, I didn't see anything in the article about cross over upgrade, or being able to upgrade a current S5. Even more important, what is the price. A better (assumed) speaker at the same price is ideal, and would keep an upgrade price lower.

The S5 Mk II in MCast finish MSRP is $38K. There are no current plans for upgrading existing S5's to Mk II.

After listening to the S7's for two weeks, we ordered a pair of S5 Mk II yesterday which will arrive in January.

Don't understand the $30K more? The S5 Mk II is $38K with similar but not identical tweeter and midrange and less one woofer and each S5 Mk II's cabinet weighs 80 lbs less than an S7 that cost $20K more than the S5MK II. I know for sure that the S7's are competitive at $58K in the marketplace and am expecting/guessing that the S5 MK II's to be competitive at $38K.

It will be interesting to see just how similar the midrange and tweeter are to the S7.

    Darn. I mean good.

I want to be finished spending money, but was willing to go up to $10k for an upgrade. Depending on upcoming reviews, but I would bet the MK2 is a good improvement. Will the existing S5 stay in production?

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

This Mk2 is a good thing. The improved tweeter and midrange is what the S5 needed. Given that the S5 is the perfect size for most rooms, it makes sense to me that this product get updated.

Another woofer and 80lbs of cabinet per speaker. Yes it will be interesting to see how the mid and tweeter compare to the S7's. They are made out of the same materials as the S7's drivers, just variations for the different cabinet and matching with the bass drivers. And then you have the polycarb midrange driver housing that is in the S7 in the S5II.

Once the S5 MKII starts shipping in January the existing (original S5) will no longer be produced.

Now a S1 mk2? Wow. They sure are busy turning out the new models. I'm curious, how many speakers has Magico introduced since Harman introduced the Revel Salon 2 in 2006? I count:

    M6
    V3
    M5
    V2
    Ultimate
    Q1
    Q3
    Q5
    Q7
    S1
    S3
    S5
    S7
    Q7 mk2
    S5 mk2
    S1 mk2
    M Projects...

17 speakers according to my calculations. Wow. That's innovation!

I have often wondered about that. The speed at which Audio Research releases their "Reference" pre-amps and amps is ridiculous. It is amazing how they can find enough improvements to replace their previous model(s) within a couple of years. Resale value is bound to take a significant hit.

Discussion: are these engineering centric companies, marketing centric companies or both?

I've razzed on ARC, but I think Magico's pace of product launches and engineering outstrips them by a long shot.

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

Mike this nothing new with next model up big speakers. The cabinet is where most (maybe I should just say a lot) of the cost of a Magico speaker is. The S7 weighs twice as much as the outgoing S5's.

How much more are Q7 mkI's over a pair of Q5's - 100k??? Same amount of woofers just bigger ones.

My guess is engineering oriented. If you have newer, better technology then why not use it. The alternative is just do nothing and milk the cash cow for every penny.

    Mike,

I'm really surprised that Alon is not offering the Mk2 upgrade to S5 owners. I know many were waiting anxiously for it. I guess he's only interested in taking care of Q7 owners. I wonder how much money this decision will cost S5 owners in resale value? Painful when the stroke of a pen costs you thousands. C'est la vie.

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

I think the S5 is now 4-5 years old. It was the first of the S series, and Magico has learnt some things, and made driver improvement. So, why not update it?

I agree it would be nice to have an S5 upgrade. However, what needs to be done internally for the mid enclosure? Are the new driver screw holes in the same location as the original? If not, a new baffle is needed. We know the top has to be replaced. Of course, Magico will melt down any replaced aluminum and reuse it as something else. Let's give them a bit to definitively state there will be no upgrade.

Fair enough, Bud.

According to commentary on another forum, cabinet is less deep/shallower on mk iis so no way to upgrade original S1/S5s because cabinet is different, which I suspect has to do with matching body geometry/volume to new drivers used.

I can't keep up. I could have sworn we just heard about the S7 a few weeks ago.

    Maybe call the S5 mk2, the S6?

Regardless, just because one model receives an upgrade doesn't automatically make the old one bad. The S5's with Pass/Vitus is excellent.

That is true. I am currently enjoying the Hades out of mine. I finally added ground cables from both amps to the Triton, and it does seem to have added a bit more openness and subtle detail to the music. I need to spend another eight hours or so listening to music to solidify that feeling.

Not bad, just really hard to sell for a decent price. Take my K-01 for example, same deal, even though a partial upgrade is available to PCM 384/DSD 64.

It has been 2.5 years since I have my S5. I welcome the arrival of the MkII, as the changes seem worthwhile. If the S5 can be upgraded within ~$10,000, it would be easy decision for me. Otherwise, I will wait for reviews and auditions. It just happens that I normally change speakers every 2 - 3 years in the past.

I don't worry about frequent model upgrades as long as the changes are well documented. I still don't quite know what are changed between a Ref 75 and a Ref 75SE other than the output tube type.

Charles, the early reports are that the original S5 will not be upgradable to the mk2.

Yes Mike, that unfortunately seems to be the case. The MkII better be substantially improved in SQ. The S5 has been very satisfying in my environment.

+1. It makes more sense to me to have such a "S2" configuration than the S3, which I think is not adequately differentiated from the S5.

Saw a post on another site (may have been from Bodhi!) stating that the press release was mistaken regarding the use of the new diamond/beryllium tweeter in the S1 and S5 MkII versions. Says that they will not be using it and that they confirmed with a dealer that they will still use a beryllium tweeter as shown in the picture. Not sure what to believe but I would lean towards the official release from the manufacturer being correct.

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

As I read the data on the new Magico S5 Mk2 it appears to be a nearly complete overhaul of the original design rather than a change that was minor enough to harmoniously fit into an upgrade path. Nearly everything about the Mk2 breaks new ground. This is the first Magico speaker to pique my interest. Additionally, the slightly contoured top plate and the thicker base plate with the new outriggers make its appearance far more attractive in my opinion. I am looking forward to reading new user impressions.

As the new tweeter is probably most distinguishing, it doesn't make good sense not to include it. My interest would drop significantly without the new tweeter.
