Normally $999 for the stock/basic model. It was on sale for $720, but I optioned it up all the way and was $1400 delivered.

    Things to note:
    1. Make sure you check the DAC dimensions before ordering as this thing is quite big for a DAC.
    2. SPDIF is limited to 96Khz only.
    3. Make sure you have enough clearance on your rack as the rectifier tube (5U4G) sticks out quite a bit
    4. The preamp is very good but has RCA only and it has no remote.
    5. DoP is limited to DSD128 only

I don't want to say too much right now, only because it only has a few hours on it. But, honestly. It definitely competes with the best that I've had. My memory of the Lampi has faded a little and think the Lampi was/is a little sweeter but overall, this seems more neutral, for lack of a better word but has lots of air, and dimension. I'll need a few days to live with it. I am so surprised at what has been achieved at this price point.

    Enjoy her Joe.

And while I've been absent of late, I'm always watching from the shadows. It seems that you and Tom have come across a winner. Where's Norman by the way when one needs his opinion on said DACs at this price?.

Happier New Year to all of you by the way.

You can sweeten/fatten it up a bit with early issue Mullard but the cost even from Andy would be high. I tried it briefly with labeled Mullard and with Matsushita's made in the Mullard tooled factory in Japan. Not bad but I went back in the other direction. The Reflektor and the Tungsrams' for the BHK amps were good.

I'm going to give it a week or two and get really familiar with it, then roll some of what I have. I am smiling right now and can't believe the level of performance with this thing. Wow!

I ran a set of the Siemens like you bought for a little over a month and may go back, but trying the 12 volt family now. The 12AU7 lowers the gain a good bit which for me was a good thing.

The AKM chips are every bit as capable as any ESS chip just a different flavor. Their newest chips, announced at CES the same time as the newest ESS ones, are also just starting to get used in gear. Many manufacturers favor them like Esoteric. That same chipset is used in an $8000 Esoteric player. The newest chip the 4495 is used in the $12,000 and $20,000 models above it. So they think it is O.K.

No doubt... just an interesting point... another flavor DAC is all... just one I have never had the opportunity to own.... I have had 3 different BurrBrowns, Cirrus Logic, and a few different ESS's...

    Hi! Newbie here.

I've been following this thread with great interest and really appreciate all the useful comments and pics. I suspect you'll be hearing more from me more as I just placed an order for the MP-D2.

I was on the R2R bandwagon, had extreme interest in the Holo Spring and had actually placed an order but canceled after a one month wait and no DAC. I then came across the MP-D2 and was impressed by all the rave reviews. It seems like everybody across multiple forums likes this DAC which is a very good sign. I was also impressed by the large, heavy chassis and open design. So I balanced all the considerations including the price and took the plunge.
I picked the basic model and will roll caps and tubes after it breaks in.

I can hardly wait to fire up this heavyweight.

    ...Roy

Unless he changed something from earlier he was going W4S Sonos, to MP DAC to STP-SE to Accuphase A-36.

You could make a hell of a system you could live with for a long time for reasonable money with a Auralic Aries Mini with an LPS, MP DAC, STP-SE, Nord One Up stereo amp and a pair of Spatial M3 Turbo S's. Would put you at a little over $8000 if all were bought new and less if any were used. All you would need then would be a CD player and TT rig if that interested you.

Just checking ... the DAC spec says E88CC.
    12AU7 equivalent is the ECC82??

Very interesting DAC Joe. It will be interesting to hear how it develops sound wise. But no wonder it is crisp sounding with the AKM chips.
