Mike, energy is not stored or sent back, it is transformed in other (more benign) forms of energy like heat. I do agree that the term used (isolation) is incorrect, I would call it conversion!

Mike, I do agree with BlueFoxThere is no "what went in" with a musical instrument, so artists have the chioce of sound. However, a stereo is a reproducing device, so it should not mess with the sound...

Neutrality can be measured, at least for the electronic part of the reproducing chain. The electro-acoustical part is kind of more difficult to assess but not impossible.
