    Re: Raidho D x.1 announced

I was really hoping that price included shipping. The only slight downside of getting a new pair would be I'm used to the sound of broken in D2's. As fantastic as Raidhos sound out of the box I do know they get even better. I really noticed that difference when I got the D2's after having the D1's for over 2000hrs. Even with the upgrade the new motor/driver and crossover would have to be broken in again too.

    Thanks guys.

Not a lot out there yet. Ken, I think you have pretty much nailed things. it seams to me, the real test will be to see if the magic of the midrange is maintained or is it sacrificed in any way for more dynamics and better control of the bass at higher spl's.

I have, in fact, just recently been doing some work with Nyal on integrating a Magico Sub with my D3's to accomplish a similar result.

The Dx.1's release is exciting though to say the least. At this point it would not be entirely clear to me that an upgrade would be preferred in all cases. This may come down to a personal preference. At a minimum a careful a/b would seem to be in order, but if all the Raidho "beauty" is still there along with the promised improvements in dynamic headroom it sounds like a win-win!! Lower noise floor would be icing on the cake.

    Hi Paul,

I totally agree with your comments. I'll really need to be sold on the new design to do this upgrade. It sounds like your customized room is coming along well. Very exciting about the Magico sub. Sounds like the perfect choice to produce the speed required to keep up with the Raidho drivers.

    Best,
    Ken

Not certain a sub(s) is the direction I will go but I am considering the possibility seriously. Lots of complications with not wanting to pollute my analog signal down stream of my MSB with dsp and also not wanting to even put an analog crossover like the Pass xvr-1 in my Soulution chain. The new D3.1 may change this entire analysis.

    Hi Paul,

I understand where you're coming from. I am interested in adding DSP room correction software to my system but my one caveat is that it must be upstream of my DAC. I'm interested in using Audiolense or Acourate software in conjunction with the JRiver engine. Once my DAC converts to analog, the signal will stay analog right to my speakers. Of course, there are many ways to skin a cat.

    Hey Ken,

Doing a crossover in the digital domain when we have dacs like ours makes my head hurt. (I sure aint buying another Dac V for the mids or highs...lol). I guess I could do room correction only in the digital domain and send that to my MSB but I would still probably need a crossover to run the sub I want. (Of course I would never run my analog source though dsp.)

I think an on board eq in an active sub running my d3's at full range will be best for me. Maybe doing an analog crossover between my Soulution pre and amp. Kent English at Pass is testing the xvr-1 for me to see if it can handle the low impedance of the 501's but frankly that sounds sacrilegious. Cyrill might never talk to me again.

    Hi Paul,

If you're going to do the sub, this makes the most sense to me as well. The less complicated the better.

    Best of luck,
    Ken

Ya but getting phase right between a sub and a ported speaker without crossover is tricky. I might goof around just to see. I think Nyal has done great work with the room so it may make equalization a bit less challenging. It will be fun to see how it all plays out.
