    Any love for Stax here?

Lots of Headphone and amp talk on every board, but I never see anyone mention Stax.

When I was a little Audio-Tyke, my brother had a couple pairs of Stax with dedicated amps. I remember them sounding really nice.

    Who has them here?

I currently don't have any Stax but have owned both the SR007 and SR009s over the last couple of years. Great headphones. My preference right now are the HE-1000 from Hifiman.

I was hesitating between BHSE+SR009 and a HE1000 and... I just bought the HE1000 today ;-). So your statement reassure me on my choice. Could you explain why you prefer the HE1000 over the STAX ? ( I remember being SUPER impressed by the BHSE+SR009 during CanJam London, but HE1000 is easier to include into an existing system, and I have already a tube Amp Eddie Current 445)

best I've heard is the BHSE + 009. I owned that combo three years ago. really, really, great sound.

it was very uncolored for a headphone; and very listenable. I compared it to my big rig and it was hanging in there. the BHSE is an outstanding amplifier.

if I was buying another headphone set-up that would fit into my sonic viewpoint I would not hesitate to buy that again.

I waited 14 months for the amp and 6 months for the 009's as that was when they were first introduced.

I had owned Stax 007 for some time. Great headphones. Only sold them as I didn't use them much if at all. The wear comfort is unbeliveable. So is the sound. If I was to buy headphones again, I would get the current Stax 009.

    Stax = Porsche.

Re: Any love for Stax here?

I'm glad to hear they still have a place with so many choices. I thought the pairs I listened to 30 some years ago were tops so I would love to hear a newer set someday.

I own a pair of Grado 125s which I rarely use 1 or 2 times a year. I don't have a dedicated amp but my old Hafler 945 does have a separate headphone amp within, and both my Rotel and Onkyo receivers have can output.

I like the open air Grados because I hate being isolated and unaware of what is going on around me.

Re: Any love for Stax here?

I own a BHSE and a woo Wes with stax 009. Also woo wa5 and a few other headphones.
My choice is the hifi man he6. The new he1000 are very nice and still have that ribbon or speakers over your head sound. Love it. To compare the stax to a hifiman is just not a real comparison they sound completely different. The stax have little weight and very fast in speed if you are someone who likes every detail there is stax is your choice clearly . If you want less but musical as in real music get the hifiman. But be carful of the amp you buy it will effect the tone on the sound meaning warm or neutral. A tube amp yields more mauicality at the price of warmth . While a solid state amp yields a more neutral sound. If a solid state amp that's is not warm is chosen the pass line is all warm in varying amounts. The he1000 has slightly mid resess and a bit of rolled off highs. And needs less power to drive them as well. A 45 tube amp might be a better choice for the he1000. They look great and sound very good . I like my woo Wes more than the BHSE as it rolls many more tubes also changing the caps inside your woo makes changes as well. The stock caps are nice but a bit hard but the stax I feel needs this.
The doffence from stax 007 to 009 is basically this. The 009 have much more details where the 007 have less and someone who wants it more musical may want the stax 007. For me they smear the sound while the 009 are sharp.
    I hope this helps someone.

I have the 2050A from Japan and love them. They are hooked up directly to my Rega Apollo. They ruthlessly expose poor sources and I've not found another option so far. I wonder if flac--> Iphone-->dragonfly red or a dap like the ibasso dx90 would be any good.

    Music is mostly classical, vocals.
    Any thoughts?

I am not a big HP guy, but yesterday called my pal who owns Heil AMT and asked to arrange a loaner of the Ergo AMT HPs ($1200) with the dedicated AMP-2 ($2k). These apparently surpass the Jecklin Float electrostatics.

The ergonomics of the Ergo is apparently well thought out and the AMT drivers are legendary. I am eager to compare to dynamic driver HPs.
